Fractal Soup

Completed: August 2006.

Briefing Summary

This project was attached to an external brief supplied by House and Leisure Magazine, and required that we design a lampshade for the local market while interpreting the theme 'fresh floral'. Specifically, we had to focus on the criteria's of accessibility, marketability, and originality. For this brief I decided to abstract the idea of 'fresh flora' into something far less literal than floral patterning on a pre-existing frame. I decided to look at nature, starting with flowers in general, then moving on to fractals in nature, fractal imagery, and proportionate relationships.

Comments

What is a fractal? A fractal is a shape that is recursively constructed or self-similar, that is, a shape that appears similar at all scales of magnification. Approximate fractals are easily found in nature. These objects display self-similar structure over an extended, but finite, scale range. Examples include clouds, snowflakes, plants, and flowers.

Fractal Soup is made from a series of 3mm Perspex profiles that interlock together to form a shape reminiscent of certain fractal images.
